Conservation of Biodiversity

Please note: This page is still under construction – please click here for a list of completed chapters. The People’s Agenda 21 Project is a 100% volunteer project created and designed by the One Community Team. We are working 1000′s of hours to keep developing its 40 chapters of sustainability to share for those interested in sustainability what is available and working around the world. Thank you for your patience.

CONSERVATION OF BIOLOGICAL DIVERSITY

The current decline in biodiversity is largely the result of human activity and can create problems that would be beneficial to everyone to address. The objectives and activities in this chapter of People’s Agenda 21 are intended to improve the conservation of biological diversity and the sustainable use of biological resources.

OVERVIEW

  • Benefits of biodiversity
  • Conservation of biodiversity

BENEFITS OF BIODIVERSITY

Our planet’s essential goods and services depend on the variety and variability of genes, species, populations and ecosystems. Biological resources feed and clothe us and provide housing, medicines and spiritual nourishment. The natural ecosystems of forests, savannahs, pastures and rangelands, deserts, tundras, rivers, lakes and seas contain most of the Earth’s biodiversity. Farmers’ fields and gardens are also of great importance as repositories, while gene banks, botanical gardens, zoos and other germplasm repositories make a small but significant contribution. The current decline in biodiversity is largely the result of human activity and can create problems that would be beneficial to everyone to address.

Ideas for those interested in implementation

  • Support
  • Take action
  • Effective local and individual cooperation is one of the most beneficial actions we can take for the on-site protection of ecosystems, for the off-site conservation of biological and genetic resources, and for the enhancement of ecosystem functions. The participation and support of local communities are elements essential to the success of such an approach. Individuals have the sovereign right to conserve their biodiversity and sustainably use their biological resources that ensure activities within their jurisdiction or control do not cause damage to the biological diversity of beyond the limits of individual and local jurisdiction

CONSERVATION OF BIODIVERSITY

Despite mounting efforts over the past 20 years, the loss of the world’s biological diversity, mainly from habitat destruction, over-harvesting, pollution and the introduction of foreign plants and animals, has continued. Biological resources constitute a capital asset with great potential for yielding sustainable benefits. Capacities for the assessment, study and systematic observation and evaluation of biodiversity can be explored and demonstrated at individual and local levels.

Ideas for those interested in implementation

  • Actions to address this issue at a communal level to conserve and maintain genes, species and ecosystems, with a view to the sustainable management and use of biological resources would be beneficial to us all
